by Jacques Duboux & Rakel McMahon on the 18th of October at A - DASH.

It is not uncommon, that the emotional has been dismissed by logic, set up as a dual where one excludes the other. This tendency to separate emotions from logic is overly simplified and limiting, where as in unity they are able to provide a more holistic perspective. This is exactly what the works of Swiss artist Jacques Duboux and Icelandic/Irish artist Rakel McMahon highlight when they are brought together in the exhibition Pushing the Feeling.

The exhibition is composed of two series: "I feel too much, real emotion", a series of colourful paintings by McMahon´s that address fluid, dreamlike, unstable and dynamic situations. And "Dynamies", a series of geometric, stable, mural steel sculptures by Jacques Duboux based on an inventory of primary gestures and a transcript of the artist’s physical proportions. Despite this obvious difference in their approach they are dealing with two sides of the same coin - human existence where the physical impacts the emotional, and vice versa.

A sampling of impressions is therefore celebrated here commonly. "I feel too much, real emotion" shows objects in different postures, under pressure, that refer to true sensation, but contained. Intense, but too cramped to move and manifest concretely. An "immotion". Then "Dynamies", although frozen by their sculptural status, function as a vector for expressing actions mentally, and in many ways according to the viewer. It ties in with its etymology, the Greek dynamis (δύναμις), which Plato related to the revealing property or quality of being.

These sculptures can as much be transposed in the context given by the paintings, that, conversely, the generosity of the paintings can virtually slide in the background of the sculptures to offer them an environment. As the concept of communicating vessels, the content of the two series seems static on the surface, but in fact, a random flow transfers from one to the other "receptacle", depending on the relationships that the viewer creates.

Δεν είναι πρωτόγνωρο ότι το συναίσθημα έχει απορριφθεί από τη λογική, σαν ένα ζέυγος όπου το ένα κομμάτι του αποκλείει από το άλλο. Αυτή η τάση που ξεχωρίζει τα συναισθήματα από τη λογική είναι υπερβολικά απλοποιημένη και περιοριστική, εφόσον στην ενότητα τους μπορούν να παρέχουν μια πιο ολιστική άποψη. Αυτό είναι ακριβώς που ο Ελβετός καλλιτέχνης Jacques Duboux και η Ισλανδή / Ιρλανδή καλλιτέχνιδα Rakel McMahon υπογραμμίζουν στην κοινή τους έκθεση Pushing the Feeling.

Η έκθεση αποτελείται από δύο σειρές έργων: I Feel Too Real, Emotion, μια σειρά από πολύχρωμες ζωγραφιές από την McMahon που απευθύνονται σε ρευστές, ονειρικές, ασταθείς και δυναμικές καταστάσεις. Και Dynamies, μια σειρά γεωμετρικών, σταθερών, τοιχογραφημένων χαλύβδινων γλυπτών από τον Jacques Duboux, βασισμένη σε μια απογραφή πρωτευουσών χειρονομιών και φυσικών αναλογιών του καλλιτέχνη. Παρά την προφανή διαφορά στην προσέγγισή τους, και οι δυό τους, ασχολούνται με τις δύο πλευρές του ίδιου νομίσματος - την ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη, όπου οι σωματικές επιπτώσεις είναι συναισθηματικές και αντίστροφα.

Επομένως, η δειγματοληψία εντυπώσεων είναι ο κοινός τόπος εδώ. Το I Feel Too Real, Emotion παρουσιάζει αντικείμενα σε διαφορετικές καταστάσεις, υπό πίεση, που αναφέρονται στην αληθινή αίσθηση, αλλά περιέχονται. Έντονη, αλλά πολύ περιορισμένη για να κινηθεί και να εκδηλωθεί συγκεκριμένα. Μια "ακίνηση". Στη συνέχεια, στο Dynamies, αν και παγιδευμένη από τη γλυπτική της κατάσταση, λειτουργει ως φορέας για να εκφραστεί διανοητικά και ποικιλότροπα, σύμφωνα με τον θεατή. Το έργο έχει άμεση αναφορά στην ελληνική ετυμολογία δύναμις, την οποία ο Πλάτωνας σχετίζει με την αποκαλυπτική ιδιότητα ή ποιότητα του όντος.

Αυτά τα γλυπτά μπορούν να μεταφερθούν στο πλαίσιο που δίνεται από τα έργα ζωγραφικής, στα οποία, αντίθετα, η γενναιοδωρία μπορεί ουσιαστικά να γλιστρήσει στο φόντο των γλυπτών για να τους προσφέρει ένα περιβάλλον. Όπως και με τον νόμο των συγκοινωνούντων δοχείων, το περιεχόμενο των δύο έργων δείχνει στατικό στην επιφάνεια, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα, μια τυχαία ροή μεταφέρεται από το ένα στο άλλο "δοχείο", ανάλογα με τις σχέσεις που δημιουργεί ο θεατής.

Born in Lausanne in 1982, Jacques Duboux lives and works in Vevey (CH), where he co-founded the artist-run space STADIO. He joined the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in the first half of 2018, then A-DASH in Athens during Autumn of the same year. His series Dynamies recently gave rise to a book published by TSAR Editions.

A graduate in Visual Arts from ECAL (Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne), his productions address the concept of 'affordance' and the intuitive relationship with objects. He infuses his sculptures with characteristics mainly geared towards their manipulation, while also awarding them performative qualities. Yet, the choice of material and the position of the works compromise their potential function and lead to a mental representation of gesture and movement.

Rakel McMahon (b.1983) lives and works between Athens and Reykjavík. She graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2008; she also holds a diploma in Gender Studies from the University of Iceland and a M.Art.Ed. from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited at various places both in Iceland and internationally.

McMahon also participates in two active collaborative projects; It´s the Media Not You, which was founded in 2014 with artists Eva Ísleifs and Katrín Inga Jóns-Hjördísardóttir and performance duo Wunderkind Collective, which was founded in 2011 in partnership with author Bergþóra Snæbjörnsdóttir.
In addition McMahon has also seen to organising exhibitions, artist-run spaces and other cultural events such as the artistic board of Sequences - real time art festival and is a former member of the board of The Living Art Museum (2013-2015).

McMahon is interested in approaching and presenting her subject matter through re-interpretation, the use of metaphor and a reevaluation of what is deemed serious, humorous and normal. The subject and issues she works with relate to gender, sexuality, stereotypes and normality.
