The animal-land-plant-mineral world is represented again and again by civilizations. How are these creatures-plants-rocks used to depict power constructions? What sounds would the animals engraved into nobels’ coats of arms make? What fruits would be born by the tree in the power company’s logo bear? Is it fair to speak about power dynamics and hierarchy throughout these symbols?

The Black Tongue, a duel exhibition by Hugo Llanes and Paki Vlassopoulou, uses iterations of prints, murals, and sculptures to explore the mutating symbolism of non-humans between three cities; Reykjavik, Iceland, Athens, Greece, and The Athens of Veracruz (Xalapa), Mexico.

Kannski is an artist-run exhibition space located downtown. They show work that feels different from that commonly seen in the Reykjavik art scene. It´s a space that emphasizes work by POC, LGBTQIA+ individuals and minority groups. Their selections are made without consideration of age, background or exhibition history.

Kannski is run by Sadie Cook and Diljá Þorvaldsdóttir. Fríða Katrín Bessadóttir is Kannski social media manager.
